Hermit Crabs aren’t picky when it comes to what they eat in the wild which includes fruits and veggies. But knowing what fruit to give it is the key for its health and longevity.
What Do Hermit Crabs Generally Eat?
As mentioned above, Hermit Crabs eat a variety of food which includes fruits, vegetables, small fishes, and meat. It’s important to know that as an owner you should try to avoid giving it processed food to prolong its life and for health reasons.
Calcium and carotene are key essentials on Hermit Crabs’ diet. So where can you get carotene-rich food for your hermit crabs? From brightly-colored veggies such as eggplant, corn, and carrots. Carotene aid in the color of your crabs, so if they are deficient in Carotene, they will most likely look pale in color after molting.
So, What Fruits and Veggies Should I Give Them?
Don’t get too excited yet, because you have to consider as well which fruits and veggies are safe to be consumed by your little critters. And are the list that are safe for your hermit crabs and very accessible as well:
- Apple
- Asparagus

How Do I Feed Them?
You’re free to leave them sliced or by piece on their enclosure, Hermit Crabs will take their time to eat their food. Just make sure you regularly check them if the food has been sitting for days, then remove it immediately to avoid any molding that may harm your hermit crabs.
Make sure as well that all of your hermit crabs have access to fresh and saltwater. They will be needing it for drinking and even bathing as well. That too, should be checked and changed regularly to avoid algae or any bacteria forming in the water.
